喬依斯都柏林人(Dubliners)短篇故事集當中的第9篇寄宿公寓(The Boarding House)故事很簡單,便是1個在都柏林開設寄宿公寓(1種供應食宿的出租屋子)的離婚女人穆尼太太(Mrs. Mooney),她的女兒波麗(Polly)跟其中的1個房客多蘭老师(Mr. Doran)發生了關係,穆尼太太用很果斷的动作,把整件变乱處理掉,順利把自己的女兒給銷出去了。
在好久很久夙昔的台灣政壇,在連戰與宋楚瑜還是敵人的時候,宋楚瑜手底下有1個長得還挺帥的政客,讓1個有點名氣的女人懷孕並且墮胎了,宋楚瑜在变乱爆發的時候,當下就把這個風流帥哥打消職務。當時的媒體可能大约跟老宋的意識形態比較合,而且拍宋楚瑜馬屁也拍習慣了(畢竟是夙昔的新聞局長),就對宋老师的處理动作大大讚揚了1番,說他有「明快處理」。這時有人就想到說,這樣連戰大要會吃味,就在報紙(應該便是沉着時報吧)上面畫了1幅單格漫畫,在裡面連戰(1個眼睛流1滴眼淚,咬牙切齒手握拳)正在痛罵底下的男性幕僚,他說:
「 你們都沒有1個人來讓我明快處理!你們這些醜男人!!」
這漫畫的梗告訴我們,第1,政客喜歡决断凸顯個人处事風格來騙選票。第2,处事明快果斷,確實是1個值得彰顯的道德特質。第三,便是開除自己的1個部属,發個饬令也不必要什麼時間,终究是何明快之有?台灣當時那些狗腿媒體在下筆寫刻画詞以前,也許該多看點小說看看处事明快的人终究是怎麼1回事。
以是,穆尼太太处变乱是1個怎樣的明快法?她可能大约早就知道自己的女兒會喜歡上房客,卻在变乱有發生的徵兆時,决断按兵不動,觀察波麗是跟哪1個房客有不尋常的關係。看著兩個年輕人在屋子裡面眉來眼去,生米差不多煮成熟飯的時候,就決定出面干預了。
集体處理這種变乱,在1個社會風氣還不算太開放的時代,插手其中的人應該要帶點情緒才是。台灣鄉土劇就每每在演,也許氣氛凝重的家裡面,兩個年輕人應該要跪在爸媽的面前,女兒不停在哭,然後男生跪在地上跟老人家賠罪,欢喜說自己1定會讓女孩子幸福,然後老人家大概也是哭,大概是生氣,聲色俱厲地講1些你們怎麼可能這樣子,這樣怎麼對得起列祖列宗之類的氣話。可是在穆尼太太找女兒談話的的那個早上,整個氣氛就不是這個樣子。

Mrs. Mooney glanced instinctively at the little gilt clock on the mantelpiece as soon as she had become aware through her reverie that the bells of George’s Church had stopped ringing. It was seventeen minutes past eleven: she would have lots of time to have the matter out with Mr. Doran and then catch short twelve at Marlborough Street. She was sure she would win. To begin with, she had all the weight of social opinion on her side: she was an outraged mother. She had allowed him to live beneath her roof, assuming that he was a man of honour, and he had simply abused her hospitality. He was thirty-four or thirty-five years of age, so that the youth cannot be pleaded as his excuse; nor could ignorance be his excuse, since he was a man who had seen something of the world. He had simply taken advantage of Polly’s youth and inexperience: that was evident. The question was: what reparation would he make?
There must be reparation made in such a case. It is all very well for the man: he can go his ways as if nothing had happened, having had his moments of pleasure, but the girl has to bear the brunt. Some mothers would be content to patch up such an affair for a sum of money: she had known cases of it. But she would not do so. For her only one reparation could make up for the loss of her daughter’s honour: marriage.
She counted all her cards again before sending Mary up to Mr. Doran’s room to say that she wished to speak with him. She felt sure she would win. He was a serious young man, not rakish or loud-voiced like the others. If it had been Mr. Sheridan or Mr. Meade or Bantam Lyons, her task would have been much harder. She did not think he would face publicity. All the lodgers in the house knew something of the affair; details had been invented by some. Besides, he had been employed for thirteen years in a great Catholic wine-merchant’s office, and publicity would mean for him, perhaps, the loss of his job. Whereas if he agreed all might be well. She know he had a good screw for one thing, and she suspected he had a bit of stuff put by.
Nearly the half-hour! She stood up and surveyed herself in the pier-glass. The decisive expression of her great florid face satisfied her, and she thought of some mothers she knew who could not get their daughters off their hands.

這樣的考虑過程就發生在穆尼太太與女兒談完接著要叫多蘭老师下來的那1個短短的空檔,晚1點她還得趕著出門去辦事。她1邊想著要怎樣跟多蘭老师談判,1邊還規劃下午要搭車的变乱,恍如女兒的变乱就只是她下午的表定旅程之1。

可能大约檢查過流程以後,穆尼太太確定這男人十之89跑不掉了,就要傭人去請多蘭老师下來谈天。而多蘭老师儘管有1點點不甘願,也就這樣答應了婚事。
這樣的1件变乱,看起來恍如很簡單,可是要不是穆尼太太的明快處理,也不太大要這麼快就塵埃落定。這短篇故事的開始,在談判的主要情節要發生夙昔,喬依斯独霸穆尼太太的成長背景,對穆尼太太的果斷做了1些鋪陳,顯示出來,1個愛爾蘭市井小民的果決個性,還真的是留存去千錘百鍊出來的(我們這邊老把個性掛在嘴邊實際处事1點個性都沒有的政客其實基础底细沒得比)。

She had married her father’s foreman and opened a butcher’s shop near Spring Gardens. But as soon as his father-in-law was dead, Mooney began to go to the devil. By fighting his wife in the presence of customers and by buying bad meat he ruined his business. One night he went for his wife with the cleaver and she had to sleep in a neighbor’s house.

後現代作家伊塔羅.卡爾維諾在給宁靖盛世的備忘錄裡面,提示要寫小說的年輕人,在說故事的時候,要注意到敘事當中屬於快的節奏感,意义並不是說講变乱1定要很倉促争切搞到後來不曉得自己在講什麼。重點在於,在出格明确自己要講什麼的前提之下,独霸語言的簡潔來裁減、壓縮、並且整顿自己在故事裡面要表達的芸芸眾生悲歡離合,閱讀(或書寫)語句的速度,與複雜沈重遲緩並且無可遁藏的現實,即可能對應出來1種出色的張力,形成小說閱讀的快感。在喬依斯拿來描摹穆尼太太的這第1段話,即可能成為這樣說法的註腳。穆尼太太從1個屠夫的女兒成為1個屠夫的老婆,三句話就決定了她的前半生(至少要有三十年吧,喬依斯老师真有你的),接著後面就忙著應付她那個弗成材的老公(都柏林人裡面的老公大多都弗成材),平鋪直述講這個男人怎樣饮酒、偷錢、還有把买卖搞壞。最後1個狀況的譯文多了1點譯者自己的解讀,其實這句話:
One night he went for his wife with the cleaver and she had to sleep in a neighbor’s house.
原來的翻譯應該是這樣:
1天早晨,他拿著切肉刀去找妻子,她只好逃往鄰居家睡覺。
並沒有「竟」這個字,也便是說,敘述的口氣並沒有「竟然會這樣」的想法,講白1點,講故事的人並不覺得這些变乱有什麼好大驚小怪的,愛爾蘭的男人愛饮酒,有錢就把錢扫数花在買酒上,沒錢就去偷錢來買酒,喝得醉醺醺的,把工作搞砸,甚至還會家暴,這些都是瞻望當中的变乱,整個情況這樣氣定神閒地說出來,反而讓人有種無可遁逃的感覺。
以是在這個無可遁逃的故事裡面,穆尼太太就開始培養起她照表操課的人生態度,大概說因為她天生的鐵娘子性格,她那锐利的手腕在類似這種老公弗成材的鳥事裡面失去層層的焠鍊,到最後本事做出下午出門買菜前跟女兒還有女兒男朋友聊聊婚事這等神乎其技的变乱:
After that they lived apart. She went to the priest and got a separation from him with care of the children. She would give him neither money nor food nor house-room; and so he was obliged to enlist himself as a sheriff’s man. 男人爛,愛饮酒,外加1臉衰相,休掉便是了,該拿的錢拿1拿,趕快開展自己事業第2春才是正經。 想太多什麼配偶情分的变乱只會讓全家人都跟著1起沈淪下去,身上有爛掉的肉就要趕快割掉(丟到街上去給他自生自滅),不然還能怎樣?大媽我從轻蔑著我爸白刀子進紅刀子出,該宰就宰,哪裡還來第2句話?現在既然我連丈夫都可能處理得乾淨俐落,你們這些三教9流的(男)房客們,皮就給我繃緊1點。
不然還能怎樣?這便是這個故事字裡行間不停在問讀者的問題。留存壓力之下,這種沒有答案的問題遲早都可能把1個人的感覺給痲痹掉,就像都柏林人裡面那些不是逆來順受便是得快刀斬亂麻的太太們1樣,相對於這些為了留存拋棄掉自己感覺(卻能把变乱處理得面面俱圆)的人,也許我們那些政客那種什麼变乱都幹不好還可能(以明快的表象)沾沾自喜的樣子,還顯得可愛1點。

穆尼太太是屠夫的女兒。她是1個性格堅定的女人︰相當有主見,辦事斗胆獨行。她嫁給了丈夫部属的工頭,隨之在春園左近開了1家肉鋪。可是岳父1死,穆尼老师就開始墮落了。他酗酒、竊取錢櫃裡的現金;欠下了少量的債務。讓他賭神罰咒矫正也是白費力氣;過不了幾天他1定故態復萌。他當著顧客的面打妻子,出卖變質的肉,由此毀了买卖。1天早晨,他竟拿著切肉刀去找妻子,她只好逃往鄰居家睡覺。
後現代作家伊塔羅.卡爾維諾在給宁靖盛世的備忘錄裡面,提示要寫小說的年輕人,在說故事的時候,要注意到敘事當中屬於快的節奏感,意义並不是說講变乱1定要很倉促争切搞到後來不曉得自己在講什麼。重點在於,在出格明确自己要講什麼的前提之下,独霸語言的簡潔來裁減、壓縮、並且整顿自己在故事裡面要表達的芸芸眾生悲歡離合,閱讀(或書寫)語句的速度,與複雜沈重遲緩並且無可遁藏的現實,即可能對應出來1種出色的張力,形成小說閱讀的快感。在喬依斯拿來描摹穆尼太太的這第1段話,即可能成為這樣說法的註腳。穆尼太太從1個屠夫的女兒成為1個屠夫的老婆,三句話就決定了她的前半生(至少要有三十年吧,喬依斯老师真有你的),接著後面就忙著應付她那個弗成材的老公(都柏林人裡面的老公大多都弗成材),平鋪直述講這個男人怎樣饮酒、偷錢、還有把买卖搞壞。最後1個狀況的譯文多了1點譯者自己的解讀,其實這句話:
One night he went for his wife with the cleaver and she had to sleep in a neighbor’s house.
原來的翻譯應該是這樣:
1天早晨,他拿著切肉刀去找妻子,她只好逃往鄰居家睡覺。
並沒有「竟」這個字,也便是說,敘述的口氣並沒有「竟然會這樣」的想法,講白1點,講故事的人並不覺得這些变乱有什麼好大驚小怪的,愛爾蘭的男人愛饮酒,有錢就把錢扫数花在買酒上,沒錢就去偷錢來買酒,喝得醉醺醺的,把工作搞砸,甚至還會家暴,這些都是瞻望當中的变乱,整個情況這樣氣定神閒地說出來,反而讓人有種無可遁逃的感覺。
以是在這個無可遁逃的故事裡面,穆尼太太就開始培養起她照表操課的人生態度,大概說因為她天生的鐵娘子性格,她那锐利的手腕在類似這種老公弗成材的鳥事裡面失去層層的焠鍊,到最後本事做出下午出門買菜前跟女兒還有女兒男朋友聊聊婚事這等神乎其技的变乱:
After that they lived apart. She went to the priest and got a separation from him with care of the children. She would give him neither money nor food nor house-room; and so he was obliged to enlist himself as a sheriff’s man. He was a shabby stooped little drunkard with a white face and a white moustache and white eyebrows, penciled above his little eyes, which were pink-veined and raw; and all day long he sat in the bailiff’s room, waiting to be put on a job. Mrs. Mooney, who had taken what remained of her money out of the butcher business and set up a boarding house in Hardwicke Street, was a big imposing woman. Her house had a floating population made up of tourists from Liverpool and the Isle of Man and, occasionally, artistes from the music halls. Its resident population was made up of clerks from the city. She governed her house cunningly and firmly, knew when to give credit, when to be stern and when to let things pass. All the resident young men spoke of her as The Madam.

男人爛,愛饮酒,外加1臉衰相,休掉便是了,該拿的錢拿1拿,趕快開展自己事業第2春才是正經。 想太多什麼配偶情分的变乱只會讓全家人都跟著1起沈淪下去,身上有爛掉的肉就要趕快割掉(丟到街上去給他自生自滅),不然還能怎樣?大媽我從轻蔑著我爸白刀子進紅刀子出,該宰就宰,哪裡還來第2句話?現在既然我連丈夫都可能處理得乾淨俐落,你們這些三教9流的(男)房客們,皮就給我繃緊1點。
不然還能怎樣?這便是這個故事字裡行間不停在問讀者的問題。留存壓力之下,這種沒有答案的問題遲早都可能把1個人的感覺給痲痹掉,就像都柏林人裡面那些不是逆來順受便是得快刀斬亂麻的太太們1樣,相對於這些為了留存拋棄掉自己感覺(卻能把变乱處理得面面俱圆)的人,也許我們那些政客那種什麼变乱都幹不好還可能(以明快的表象)沾沾自喜的樣子,還顯得可愛1點。
